Educate and Elevate Center for Belonging
Educate and Elevate Center for Belonging — Grand Rapids, Michigan
Educate and Elevate Center for Belonging cultivates resilience, connection, and growth in youth and families through accessible, trauma-informed, and community-centered support. Our Youth Division serves students and families in under-resourced neighborhoods across Grand Rapids, partnering with schools to support those navigating emotional, behavioral, and academic challenges rooted in grief and trauma. When young people feel seen, supported, and safe, they are better able to learn, grow, and thrive.
Why This Work Matters
In high-need areas of Grand Rapids, many youth navigate complex, ongoing experiences of grief and trauma — connected to community violence, loss of loved ones, housing instability, and family transitions. These experiences don't stay outside of school; they show up in classrooms, peer relationships, and academic performance.
For many students, grief is not an isolated experience but a shared and community-wide reality. Without intentional support, this leads to behavioral challenges, disengagement, and long-term impacts on mental health and learning. Families also face barriers to care, cost, transportation, and a lack of culturally responsive services. Schools are often the first place these needs become visible. We exist to bridge that gap.
Our Approach
Trauma-Informed Care
All programming is grounded in trauma-informed principles that prioritize emotional safety, trust, and healing at every step.
Cultural Responsiveness
We design programming that acknowledges and honors the lived experiences and cultural identities of the students we serve.
Small Peer-Based Groups
Groups of approximately 10 students create safe, consistent spaces where trust is built and students feel comfortable sharing their experiences.
School Partnerships
We partner directly with schools to identify and support students experiencing grief, trauma, or emotional distress — meeting them where they are.
This model is especially critical in high-need communities, where students benefit from spaces that acknowledge both individual and shared grief. Healing happens in connection and community.

Who We Serve
We serve students across Grand Rapids, with a focus on those in high-need, under-resourced communities. Participants are often referred through schools and are navigating a range of challenges:
Grief & Loss
Loss of loved ones, including through violence or sudden circumstances.
Community Violence
Ongoing exposure to violence in their neighborhoods and communities.
Family Transitions
Divorce, incarceration of loved ones, and family separation.
Social & Emotional Challenges
Behavioral, emotional, and relational difficulties affecting school life.
Our goal is to ensure support is accessible, culturally responsive, and aligned with the realities students face both in and out of school.
Our Impact
Emotional Expression
Students build healthier ways to process and express their emotions in safe, supported environments.
Confidence & Identity
Students strengthen their confidence and develop a stronger, more grounded sense of self.
Positive Coping Skills
Students develop lasting strategies to manage stress, adversity, and difficult life experiences.
Connection & Belonging
Students experience increased connection to peers and a deeper sense of belonging in their communities.

Educators and caregivers regularly report improvements in behavior, emotional regulation, and classroom engagement — highlighting the direct connection between emotional support and academic success.
